How to Choose a Family Photographer in Richmond, VA
What to Look for in a Family Photographer in Richmond VA: Compatible Personality
The best fit goes far beyond a beautiful portfolio. Look for warmth, patience, and a genuine care for families that comes through the moment you start talking. Find someone who genuinely wants to get to know you, understand your family, and loves being around kids! Someone who you feel you click with instantly from the very first conversation. This kind of connection is often the first sign in how to choose a photographer who feels right for your family. Feeling comfortable with your photographer and trusting them is so important when it comes time for your session.

What to Look for in a Family Photographer in Richmond VA: Posing Style
Look for a gentle, guiding presence in the photographer’s images rather than stiff, staged posing. The best sessions feel like a collaboration where you truly take part in the creation of your images, not just a photoshoot. When a photographer uses prompts to guide your family in bringing out those genuine smiles and heartfelt in-between moments, it shows in the images and makes the session even more enjoyable. This is exactly what to look for in a photographer whose editing and posing style truly reflects your family’s personality.

What to Look for in a Family Photographer in Richmond VA: An Experience That is Tailored to You
A thoughtful photographer treats your family’s session as entirely your own, shaped around your story. Client experience can vary among photographers. For my family sessions, we’ll meet over video call shortly after booking so I can learn more about your vision for your session and learn more about your family. We’ll discuss choosing locations that are the best fit, the ideal time of day for those locations, and outfits that photograph well and align with your style. Above all, this collaborative process is central to how to choose a photographer who will make you feel comfortable every step of the way.

What to Look for in a Family Photographer in Richmond VA: Style Guidance
Deciding what to wear is often the most overwhelming part in preparing for a family photo session, and some photographers can help take that off your plate. The right guidance should feel personal, considering your family, the season, and the location you’ll be photographed in together, along with how well certain colors and pieces photograph.
Consider what you want out of your session experience. The degree of style guidance can vary among photographers. Do you want a detailed style guide outlining what tends to photograph best, with outfit suggestions and places to shop for everyone? Or maybe you want a mock-up of coordinated outfits for your family with links, so you can easily find those items in your closet or order them? Does access to a client closet of dresses for mom that photograph beautifully sound like a weight lifted off of your shoulders? These are some of the ways I provide guidance for the families I have the opportunity to photograph.
A photographer who invests in this part of the process wants your family to walk into the session feeling confident and put together, so that all you have to think about is being fully present together.

How to Choose a Family Photographer Who Values Preserving Photos: Printed Artwork
Photographs deserve a life beyond a phone screen or a folder of digital files. A photographer who values preserving your family’s legacy will guide you toward artwork that feels as meaningful as the moments themselves, pieces that live on your walls and in your hands for generations to come. This is where the true value of your session comes to life: in tangible keepsakes designed to be treasured, not simply stored.
Artwork options can vary among photographers. These are some of the most popular pieces I offer:
- Heirloom photo albums
- Custom-framed wall art
- Matted print boxes
- Fine art prints
- And so much more.

Below are some of my favorite locations in Richmond, VA and the surrounding area.
Maymont Park
From the beautiful Italian and Japanese gardens, to ornate gazebos, magnolia trees, and plenty of open green space, Maymont Park has a variety of gorgeous backdrops for your family session. This is a stunning location for family photos year-round, but especially in the spring through early fall when the gardens are in bloom. There are fewer people on weekdays, making it an ideal time for sessions to maximize flexibility in backdrops. Mornings and evenings both work beautifully for family sessions at Maymont. They also have a parking lot and plenty of street parking for families.
The address for Maymont Park is: 1700 Hampton Street, Richmond, VA 23220.
Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens
Filled with flowers in beautiful bloom from late spring through early fall, Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens also offers garden gazebos, making it a dreamy setting for your session. Weekday mornings are the best time for photo sessions. There is also a parking lot for families.
The address for Lewis Ginter is: 1800 Lakeside Avenue, Henrico, VA 23228.
Agecroft Hall & Gardens
From the beautiful English Tudor-style manor house, to the blooming gardens, Agecroft Hall & Gardens is a gorgeous photoshoot location in Richmond, VA. The gardens are typically in bloom from mid-spring to early fall, with tulips having a peak season for a few weeks in the spring. There are also fewer people visiting Agecroft on the weekdays, and they limit the number of photo sessions at one time for more privacy. There’s a parking lot available onsite, too.
The address for Agecroft Hall & Gardens is: 4305 Sulgrave Road, Richmond, VA 23221.
The Estate at River Run
For an indoor photography session just outside of Richmond, VA, The Estate at River Run is one of my absolute favorites. From its stunning, ornate ceilings and ballroom, to its thoughtfully curated decor throughout, River Run feels elevated and refined in every corner. In addition to its jaw-dropping interior, River Run also has a beautiful outdoor garden and well-maintained landscaping, a tasteful swing, and a pool, while the building overlooks rolling hills along the James River. It’s one of my most requested venues for a photography session when clients want a polished, elegant location. Parking is available in the lot on site.
The address for The Estate at River Run is: 2421 River Road West, Maidens, VA 23102.
