3 Reasons Why I Use Digital and Film Photography for Richmond Portrait Photography Sessions

August 7, 2025

In your family photography session, you’ll see me shooting with two cameras: a film camera, which was the original camera used for photography, and a digital camera, which is more commonly used today. The beauty of film is what first drew me to photography, and it’s central to my artistry. I remember first coming across film images of European travels, and the images reminded me of a painting with their softness, texture, and coloring. I absolutely love sharing this beauty of classic film with others, but I also love digital. Both have their benefits, which is why I include both in my sessions. Here are three reasons why I use digital and film photography for my Richmond portrait photography sessions.

You get the best of both worlds.

Film naturally renders beautiful grain and color that is not standard for digital photography, and it brings an old-world nostalgia to your photos. Light is captured differently, colors are more vibrant, and skin tones are creamier.

Digital photography allows me to document quick movements (think fast toddlers!) much faster due to the speed of digital cameras. Additionally, digital photography works best in areas with lower light, such as indoors when rooms do not have enough natural light. With using both digital and film photography in my Richmond family photography sessions, I’ve trained my eye to edit digital photos to emulate film so that you have a cohesive gallery of photos.

Your session won’t be rushed.

Film photography makes you slow down and create images with intentionality. With film, we’ll document the softer moments of you with your family. The details. And those soft, sweet moments will be amplified by the nostalgic color, softness, and grain that film naturally provides.

While we will take our time with your session, we’ll also document the play and movement of your family, and that’s where digital can shine. It can help showcase the joy that naturally unfolds as your family experiences life together.

Your images can be used to create family heirlooms.

Film is timeless. With using digital and film photography, along with my style of shooting, your Richmond family photography session images will tell a story. They’ll showcase the organic, sweet moments of your family, frozen in time. Once printed, these images can turn into beautiful family heirlooms through linen-wrapped family albums or museum-quality framed wall art, cherished by your family for years to come.
