How to Prepare for Your Pregnancy Announcement Session

June 26, 2025

Pregnancy is such an exciting time filled with many new experiences and so much anticipation. One of the most exciting things early on, soon after finding out you’re expecting, is sharing the news with friends and family. Pregnancy announcement photos are a beautiful way to share your excitement with others and document that special moment of your family’s story. Here are a few things to keep in mind when prepping for your pregnancy announcement photos.

Schedule your session at a time that’s right for you.

Some mamas choose to schedule their session after their first appointment, after their first trimester, after their 20-week scan, or later in their pregnancy. Choose a timeframe that works best for you and your plans for your session. Whatever timeframe you choose, keep in mind the turnaround time for photos and when you would want to have them ready to share with friends and family. Depending on the time of year, the turnaround time can be 4-6 weeks with using film.

Choose soft neutrals or light hues for outfits.

When thinking about outfits, I find that soft neutrals and light pastels photograph best and keep the focus on your connection and your news. Solid colors and soft florals are beautiful options to keep in mind. If you’re looking into patterns, try to think of not only how they look in person, but how they will photograph. Really small prints, bold prints, stripes, and plaids can look busy and distract the focus away from you.

  • Mamas: Long, flowy dresses photograph beautifully, paired with simple jewelry and good-condition shoes without scuffs. For hair and makeup, try opting for something simple and complementary. Nude or light pink nails tend to work best and keep the focus on your connection.
  • Dads: Khakis are a great option (and likely already in your closet!), and light jeans without tears can also work well. A classic button-down or stylish shirt are good choices. It’s best to try to steer clear of T-shirts and to make sure shoes are in like-new condition.
  • Kids: Outfits should complement mom and dad in color, print, and style. Think simple with neutral colors or soft pastels! Dresses for girls can be so sweet, and a button down shirt with khaki pants works great for boys.

Select your perfect location.

Choose a location that offers what you want in your photos. Are you thinking garden-inspired, European architecture, or a vast field? There are so many beautiful options in the Richmond area that we can talk through when planning your session.

Consider simple props, if desired.

Some mamas choose to incorporate props in their photos when sharing their news. Any time props are used, I find it’s best to choose simple props that complement the photo. Sonograms are always a popular choice, and baby shoes or a simple sign can also work great.

Have fun!

Becoming parents or growing your family with another little one is such an exciting milestone! Remember to relax and have fun. Try to get plenty of rest beforehand to feel your best. Pregnancy can be exhausting and taking care of yourself is so important.
