Pregnancy has a way of inviting you to slow down, listen more closely, and seek out meaningful connection. During my own pregnancy journey, some of the most valuable insight came from other moms who have already been through pregnancy or were currently in the same season. From wellness-based care to creative services, Richmond offers a range of pregnancy and postpartum services designed to support expecting moms through this season in thoughtful ways, with new mom-centered services popping up all the time. For those moms navigating pregnancy and wondering what options are out there, these are a few pregnancy and postpartum services in Richmond that I found especially helpful during my own journey.

Pregnancy and Postpartum Services for Expecting Moms in Richmond

1. Doula Services in Richmond, Virginia

Prior to pregnancy, I didn’t fully understand the role of a doula in the pregnancy journey. I quickly learned that doulas not only provide education on pregnancy, labor, and delivery, but they can also empower expecting parents to feel confident, prepared, and truly cared for throughout the entire birthing experience.

In Richmond, A Brighter Birth offers a collective of doulas who specialize in both pregnancy and postpartum care. In addition to one-on-one care, they also provide a class series designed for first-time moms. Even more, their doulas connect families with other local resources in the Richmond, Virginia area, providing additional guidance in the pregnancy journey.

2. Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy for Pregnancy and Postpartum in Richmond

Pregnancy brings along many changes in the body, which I noticed can also cause some discomforts. Working with a pelvic floor physical therapist during pregnancy was one of the most supportive decisions I made. My physical therapist not only helped me relieve discomfort, but she was also very knowledgable about labor and delivery preparation.

RVA Holistic PT has physical therapists in Richmond who specialize in caring for pregnant and postpartum women. They also offer prenatal massage services, including a massage bed that is thoughtfully designed for pregnant bodies.

3. Lactation Consulting Services in Richmond

Breastfeeding is often described as something that comes naturally, but in my experience, it was a learned skill. Connecting with a lactation consultant prenatally and after baby’s arrival was valuable in providing support and guidance with nursing. Journey Fed has a lactation consultant who offers lactation support for Richmond moms through virtual or in-home visits to help moms with their breastfeeding journey.

4. Prenatal Yoga Classes for Expecting Moms in Richmond

Prenatal yoga classes were a great opportunity for me to engage in gentle movement during pregnancy while also focusing on relaxation and breathing. Beyond that, these classes also created an opportunity to be in community with other expecting moms, which was so valuable during pregnancy. Whole Heart Space offers prenatal yoga classes in Richmond within a friendly, comfortable environment designed with moms in mind.

5. Newborn Photography Services for Richmond Moms

Even as a newborn photographer, I also chose to work with another photographer to document this season for our family. You might be able to document some details of your little one on your own, or photos with your partner and your little one. But you also deserve to be in the photos and have family photos from this special season. When choosing a newborn photographer in Richmond, it’s best to choose one that fits your style. Are you looking for a lifestyle newborn session with gentle, simple posing, or a posed newborn session? What style of editing are you drawn to? Do you want these moments documented using film or only using digital? How are you planning to use your newborn photos after your session?

For my style, I document my newborn sessions using a lifestyle approach with gentle, simple posing. I preserve this fleeting season using both digital and film photography, and I offer the option to choose from a variety of custom artwork options, including heirloom albums and matted framed wall art.
