Top 5 Tips for Your Glen Allen Family Photography Session
Planning your session with a Glen Allen family photographer is exciting, and a little preparation goes a long way toward making the experience feel relaxed and enjoyable for the whole family. Here are my top five tips to help you get the most out of your time together and walk away with family photos that you’ll treasure for years to come.

1. Schedule during soft morning light or golden hour for family photos in Glen Allen
Light plays one of the biggest roles in your session and has the greatest impact on your final images. When scheduling your Glen Allen family photo session, I recommend choosing a time within the hour after sunrise or one to two hours before sunset. This soft, dreamy golden hour glow provides diffused light that’s flattering for every skin tone. You can choose morning or evening based on what works best for your family, your kids’ schedules, and the time of year.

2. Plan outfits in advance
Wardrobe plays another large part in your final images and your comfort during the session. As a Richmond portrait photographer, I help families style their outfits to maximize the connection in their photos. It’s best when your pieces are coordinated to create a cohesive look across the family, which is quite different from trying to match colors and patterns exactly. Instead, choose a few different colors that pair well together. A palette of two or three soft, neutral, or muted tones, like soft blues and pinks, can pair beautifully and keep the focus on your family’s connection rather than busy patterns. Adding a variety of textures can also bring more visual interest to your images. Consider the season, the occasion, and what you’ll feel most comfortable being photographed in.

3. Prep your family
Prepping your family in the days leading up to the session can make the biggest difference in your Glen Allen family photos. When families feel calm and prepared, they’re far more likely to relax into the experience, and that’s when genuine smiles and real connection come through.
Start by feeding everyone first, since a happy tummy makes for a happy face. Be sure to eat a good meal or snack beforehand, and pack a few favorite snacks in your bag for littles who might need something during the session. I recommend packing non-messy food, like oat cereal, and leaving the chocolate, strawberries, and other messy snacks at home. In the days leading up to your session, it’s also worth steering clear of dyed drinks, popsicles, lollipops, and other foods with dye, as they can stain lips and teeth.
Talk with your kids and your partner about the photo session ahead of time. Let them know you’re going to have some fun family time together (we’ll be sure to play some games!), and that someone is going to take their picture. Sharing how important this time is to you, and letting them know their cooperation is appreciated, goes a long way towards setting a positive tone.
Lastly, create a relaxed environment at home and during the car ride to your session. When families arrive relaxed, it helps everyone lean into the experience sooner, which means we get to those sweet, genuine photos filled with true connection that much faster.

4. Build in a little extra time so things don’t feel rushed
Some of the most relaxed, joyful sessions are the ones where families arrive a few minutes early. Giving yourselves a generous cushion before your session time sets the tone for the whole experience.
Getting the family dressed, allotting time for a possible outfit change for the littles, getting hair and makeup done, and handling any last-minute touch-ups can all take longer than expected, so plan plenty of time for getting ready, just in case.
Keep in mind that unexpected things can happen on the way to your session too, whether that’s traffic, a wrong turn, or a forgotten item at home. Building in extra travel time helps soften the stress when something unexpected pops up. On top of that, some locations in Glen Allen and the surrounding area have limited parking, or the lot sits a little further from the session spot. Plan extra time for parking, and wear comfortable shoes for the walk from your car to where we’ll be shooting.

5. Lean into your Glen Allen family photo experience and have fun
At the end of the day, this time is about so much more than just family photos. It’s about your family enjoying time together doing what you love most: simply being together. The best Glen Allen family photos come about when families stop chasing perfection and lean into the experience instead. That’s when we get to document true connection.
When you lean into the experience, trust your photographer, and simply enjoy your time together as a family, it shows in your photos. I’ll capture those sweet, classic family portraits of everyone smiling at the camera, but I’ll also document those in-between moments, too: siblings playing with each other, the kiss you give your child on the forehead, the way your baby looks up at you. All of that comes from simply enjoying your time together.
It helps to have something fun planned for after your session, too. Think of it like a family date: first you’ll play some games together and get your photos taken, then you might grab ice cream, bring a change of clothes and play at the park, head to dinner, or do whatever feels right for you as a family.
When you let go and lean in, that’s when the magic happens.
