One of Richmond’s most beloved spots, Maymont offers the perfect blend of nature and charm for young families.

The Italian Gardens come alive in the spring with blooming daffodils. This garden is so beautiful, but I find it’s best enjoyed in the morning before the sun gets too strong, as there isn’t much shade. The pathways here include cobblestones and stairs, so babywearing is often the easiest option with little ones. There is a parking lot that has plenty of spaces, though it can get full, which would require street parking. You can also pack a lunch and have a picnic with a view on one of the green spaces near the gardens. On the other side of the park through a separate entrance, the animal farm is always a favorite. With everything from farm animals to otters, it’s an easy, engaging experience for kids. Picnic and Play at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA)

For a slower, more relaxed outing, the grounds at the VMFA are ideal. Each spring, Agecroft’s gardens fill with thousands of tulips, usually peaking in April. It’s one of the most beautiful spots in Richmond this time of year, and a lovely place to experience with your children. Once the tulips have finished their season, the gardens transition over to other flowers later in the spring. It’s best to babywear, as there are stairs that make navigating with a stroller challenging.
